Last week, the death of Robin Williams surprised most of us. He was at the prime of his life, a very talented actor, and a successful celebrity. What could go wrong?

I am also a big fan of Robin Williams. I loved him in Dead Poets Society and Patch Adams. Gabbie Tatad asked well, "How could someone who made us laugh so much be so sad? How could someone beloved by so many feel so alone?" Read her inspiring story here.

Cause: Depression. Once again, we are made aware of what depression can do to a person, to a family.

I have two very good friends who have suffered from depression. Both have shared with me their struggles and deep secrets. Their phases are long and arduous. They recover from it and go back again. Everytime they are back in that dark phase, they held on and bounce back.

Because of them I know how difficult it is to be in that dark phase. They don't want it; they don't want to be in it; but they can't help it.

One of them took medicines to combat it. She was on a see-saw with those pills because she would take tranquilizers and then happy pills. Now, I'm happy to know that she's off those meds, and back in her usual "mataray" self. The other friend regularly sees a psychiatrist.

It is difficult. And usually when it happens, they tell me that no one can really help them. No advice, no comfort can reach out to them in that deep hole of hurt, pain, and confusion. You just got to be there for them. Silence is enough, and is even more helpful.

I wish there is a way we could BE THERE for all those lonely people out there.

For now, I pray for all those who have not let go of that rope. For those who have, may you find peace in the afterlife.
